What is a laser therapy?

It is a sort of medical treatment (therapy) using most advanced laser-based instruments.

What types of lasers are used in my private practice?

1. IPL

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a device generating light waves of various length and high intensity. The light itself is generated by a xenon lamp and the length of it is regulated by special replacable filters. Depending on wavelength, skin is penetrated so that skin changes can be easily removed without damaging the remining layers of skin and skin tissues laying in close proximity. It is called a selective photothermolisis.

The use of IPL:

a. pigmentation problems

All treatments, be it in the region of face, hands or cleavage, are conducted with IPL. Most frequently hyperpigmentation, lentigines, freckles or the so-called melasma.

b. photorejuventaion

IPL is one of the most effective method of coping with ageing symptoms. IPL interacts with hemoglobin and melanin, reduces erythema, small teleangiectasias, pigmentations marks, eliminates small wrinkles, decreases skin pores and skin sagging. The aim of photorejuventaion is skin condition improvement and boosting its natural ability to regenerate - it can be done through IPL's collagen, procollagen and elastine stimulation.

Skin color and facial features from up to 5-10 years can be regained via photorejuvention. Each treatment is conducted with most advanced equipment introduced in 2010.

The device works on the principle of selective photothermolisis which basically consists in selective heating of target skin area without damaging surrounding tissue. Optimal light waves brighten changes in vessels via directing light beam towards hemoglobin microparticles. In case of pigmentation problems, melanin is targeted. Ill-coloured skin fragments are damaged what triggers natural processes of tissue regeneration and new tissues are produced. All marks peel and vanish in 2-3 days and vessel changes disappear in 10-14 days. Crucial it is to say that during the treatment no outer part of skin is damaged. All changes are take place in the deeper layer of skin. Thanks to it such treatment do not require any break from professional activities.

c. vascular changes

Laser therapy enables effective reddenings and facial erythema removal as well as cracked and expanded nose, chin, cheeks and legs vessels treatment. IPL is also highly effective in rosacea treatment.

d. laser hair removal.

Employing laser is the most modern and most popular method of unwanted hair removal. Effectiveness of such therapy is rated 80-95%.

After laser hair removal therapy, which is abolutely painless and non-invasive method, skin is smooth, hairless and not irritated.

The therapy is always preceded by dermatologist consultation who checks skin condition, its phototype and determines indications and contrindications for such therapy. Patients qualified for a treatment are being laser-tested. Before the treatment, skin has to be shaved, dry and clean. Laser beams penetrate skin, however, not deeper than 2mms. Hair follicles are damaged, or, to be more precise, melanin inside it, leading to hair removal.

Slight skin itching (or burn) can be felt. Some patients experience reddening or swelling. Small crusts or discoloration can occur. Usually such side-effects disappear in the following few days. Each treatment must be repeated 2-3 times to get the desired effect. Dark hair are the easiest to remove due to the contrast between the skin colour and the hair what facilitates laser beam targeting. Besides, not all hair grow simultaneously. During the treatment, laser beam only reaches visible hair, i.e. hair which is growing. Thus, laser does not affect hair in state of "sleep" lasting between 3-8 weeks. Therefore, the treatment should be repeated minimum 3 times what will allow to remove 92-95% of hair.

For patients who previoulsy used other methods (waxing, mechanical epilation) 2 more treatments are recommended.

Most difficult hair to remove is this being a result of hormonal disorder. In this case, the number of treatment rises up to 6-8 sessions. Hair, being the consequent result of hirsutism, requires one correctional treatement yearly.

2. Laser Nd: YAG

Laser Nd: YAG emits amplified light waves of 1064 nms being, however, a very safe device. .

The use of laser Nd:YAG:

Laser is used for removal of surface or deep teleangiectasias, expanded vessels of diameter up to 0,4 cm. Major indications for a treatment are:

a. facial teleagniectasis,

b. body teleangiectasis

c.hemangioma,

d. PWS - Port Wine Stain

e. small varicose veins of a diameter 0,4 cm.

Laser beam effectively fights with expanded blood vessels on face, neck, cleveage, legs and it also removes angiomas, smaller varicose veins and sun spots. Laser beams penetrates skin deep under its surface without damaging its outer layer. In case of vascular changes, cracked blood vessels are targeted. Light beam of a given length reaches bloodcells and the energy emitted is absorbed by hemoglobin. Heated blood undergoes the process of coagulation, blood vessel is destroyed and expelled. During the treatment itching or burn can be experienced. If necessary, local anaesthesia can be applied (e.g. special creme can be used).

Possible, temporal side-effects are: reddening or swelling and, sporadically, crusts. Usually such problems disappear in few days. To soothe, cold compresses should be applied. After the treatment, the use of UV protection cremes with strong filters and sun avoidance need to observed. 1-5 sessions with monthly gaps are necessary to reach desired effects. It is highly-dependent on number, diameter, colour and vessels location. After each treatment, a patient should visit a doctor for a routine check-up.

3.CO2 Laser

Being most effective, most versatile, multifunctional dermato surgical CO2 laser is used here.

Major applications are:

a. wrinkles removal

b. discolorations removal

c. scars restructuring

d. treating illnesses such as keloids, dyschromia

e. flattening striae

f.  collagen regeneration

g. general skin improvements.

CO2 laser employed here is the only laser of subnanosecond impulse increase time. High amount of energy in a short impulse along with its repeating speed combined with fraction scanner is a unique achievement in controlled, repeated, almost non-invasive tissue treatment. Thanks to it, patient's skin regenrates quickly.
